When Is the Best Time to Visit Kenya for a Safari? (A Month-by-Month Guide)

If you’ve been dreaming about a Kenya safari, chances are the first question you’ve typed into Google is: when should I actually go?

It’s a fair question. Kenya is a year-round destination but depending on when you visit, you could be watching a million wildebeest thunder across the Mara River, or you could be knee-deep in the green season with the whole park to yourself. Both have their magic. It just depends on what you’re after.

Here’s an honest, no-fluff breakdown of every season so you can plan the trip that’s right for you.

The Two Main Safari Seasons in Kenya

Kenya essentially has two seasons that matter for safari planning:

Dry Season (July – October & January – February): This is peak safari time. Animals cluster around water sources, making them easier to spot. The grass is low, the skies are clear, and the Maasai Mara is at its most dramatic during the Great Migration.

Green Season / Long Rains (March – June): The bush is lush, lodges are quieter, and prices drop significantly. You’ll share the parks with fewer tourists, and the birdlife is spectacular. The downside? Some roads get muddy and a few camps close.

Month-by-Month: When to Visit Kenya

January – February: Great value, great wildlife

One of the best-kept secrets for Kenya safaris. The short dry spell means excellent game viewing in parks like Amboseli where you’ll often see hundreds of elephants against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro and Lake Nakuru. Fewer crowds, reasonable prices. A solid time to go if you’re flexible.

March – May: Green season, low prices

Kenya’s long rains fall between March and May. This is the shoulder season not the most popular time to visit, but far from a bad one. Scenery is gorgeous and green, wildlife is still abundant, and you’ll pay considerably less. If budget is a priority and you don’t mind the occasional afternoon shower, this is your window.

June: Transition month- the calm before the storm

The rains ease off, the grass starts to thin, and the wildebeest herds in Tanzania begin their march northward. June is a great time to visit if you want good game viewing without the peak-season crowds and prices that come later.

July – October: Peak season- the Great Migration

This is it. The reason most people choose Kenya.

Between July and October, over 1.5 million wildebeest along with hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle cross the Mara River in what’s widely called one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth. The crossings are dramatic, unpredictable, and absolutely unforgettable.

July through August is when the bulk of the herds arrive in the Maasai Mara. September is arguably the peak of the crossings. October sees the herds begin their return south to Tanzania.

This is also Kenya’s busiest and most expensive time to travel. Book early popular camps sell out months in advance.

November – December: Short rains & a hidden gem

November brings Kenya’s short rains lighter and more intermittent than the long rains. Wildlife is still plentiful, landscapes are beautiful, and the festive December period is actually a lovely time to be in Kenya. Christmas at a Maasai Mara lodge? Absolutely worth it.

So When Is the Best Time to Visit Kenya?

Here’s the honest answer: it depends on your priorities.

  • For the Great Migration: July to October, no question.
  • For value and fewer crowds: March to June or November.
  • For the best all-round conditions: January, February, or June.
  • For a beach + safari combo: December to March is ideal great weather on the Kenyan coast and solid game viewing inland.

There’s genuinely no “bad” time to visit Kenya. The wildlife is here year-round. What changes is the experience and your budget.
